Samples of soil were placed in two incubation chambers containing a nutrient media of amino acids, minerals, vitamins, and various organic compounds (in particular nitrogenous bases that enable the nucleic acids in chromosomes to replicate genetic code). The atmosphere in the chambers was composed primarily of helium, with traces of carbon dioxide and krypton. The device looked for changes in the levels of seven gases that can be produced or consumed by microorganisms: oxygen, methane, krypton, carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, hydrogen, and nitrogen.
